5.3. The fragment in AM 445c,I ends at a point corresponding to
p. 16, 1. 14 in Turville-Petre’s text, and f.5 of AM 564a, the first
of the fragments of the saga there, begins at p. 24, 1. 11. Between
these two points there are 286 lines—almost exactly the equivalent
of two leaves (2x 145 = 290). f.5 of AM 564a therefore begins
almost exactly where Jon Helgason would have expected the
seventh leaf of the saga to begin.
But f.5 of AM 564a contains, besides the end of the so-called
Ingolfs påttr, which is in the Modruvallabok version of the saga,
the beginning of Ogmundar påttr, which is not, and of which Jon
Helgason has therefore taken no account. This påttr is, however,
preserved in full in The Greatest Saga of Olåfr Tryggvason27, and
less than half of it appears on f.5 of AM 564a (the equivalent of
166 of the 377 lines of the påttr in the Islenzk fornrit edition,
or 44 per cent)28. The portion of Ingolfs påttr which appears on
f.5 of AM 564a is the equivalent of 53 lines in Turville-Petre’s
edition (p. 24, 1. 11-p. 25, 1. 28), so that the portion of Ogmundar
påttr on that leaf ought to fill up 145 minus 53 = 92 lines, were the
påttr included in Modruvallabok-, and if this were 44 per cent of
the whole, the entire påttr would take up 207 lines29. In the
Modruvallabok version of Viga-Glums saga there is nothing between
Ingolfs påttr and the so-called Skutu påttr, which forms the sub-
stance of the first part of f.6 of AM 564a, and apart from Ogmundar
påttr, no material is known which is likely to have come between
them. But the first 31 lines of Skutu påttr (Turville-Petre p. 25,
1. 29-p. 26, 1. 13) are missing from f.6, and must therefore have
been on the preceding leaf. The length of Ogmundar påttr would
then have been the equivalent of 92 plus (145-31) lines, or 206 lines.

Gunnars påttr, and we know of nothing else which might have completed the smallest
possible gap of one full leaf at this point.
