4. The Eyrbyggja saga fragments, with the beginning of Ævi
Snorra Goda (AM 445b, ff. 5rb6-llvb);
2 leaves lost between ff.5 and 6,
2 leaves lost between ff .6 and 7,
5 leaves lost between ff. 7 and 8,
1 leaf lost between ff.9 and 10,
1 leaf lost between ff. 10 and 11.
5. (after some lost leaves, perhaps 2, if no other material is
lost liere) The Bårdar saga fragments (AM 564a, ff.l-2r).
4 leaves lost between ff.l and 2.
6. The fragments of Pordar saga Hredu (AM 564a, ff.2r-4r).
About 20 leaves lost between ff.2 and 345.
7. The three drea,m.-pættir (AM 564a, f.4).
8. (after a space of at least 3 lost leaves, probably 5, and pos-
sibly more)46 The Gisla saga fragment (AM 445c,I, ff.2-5).
9. (after 5 lost leaves, assuming that no intermediate items are
lost) The first fragment of Viga-Glums saga (AM 445c,I, f.l).
45 This can be only an approximate figure, for the surviving parts of this version
of the saga differ radieally from the eorresponding parts of the fully preserved
version, and while it seems clear that the version partially represented here was
a good deal longer than the fully preserved one, we have no means of knowing
how great the amount of extra material was.
46 The substance known to be lost at this point (the end of Draumr Porsteins
Sidu-Hallssonar and the first part of Gisla saga) would fill three leaves, but
sinee the fragment of Pordar saga Hredu on ff.3,4 of AM 564a is continuous, these
leaves must have been in the middle of a quire—ie. the 4th and 5th leaves if it
was a normal eight-leaf quire. Similarly, the four-leaf fragment of Gisla saga is
continuous, and f.2 of AM 445c, I, 4to was therefore probably the 3rd leaf in its
quire; this implies at least a five-leaf gap, which would leave two or a multiple
of eight plus two leaves unaccounted for. None of the other contents of Vatns-
hyrna which are not known to have been in Pseudo-Vatnshyrna would by it-
self be the right length to fill this gap (Stjornu-OcLda draumr would fill 3 leaves,
Krolca-Refs saga about 7, Kjalnesinga saga about 74/2, Laxdæla saga about 38),
and inventing combinations of them would be pure speculation.
It is possible, as Stefån Karlsson suggests (cf. his article above, 3.3), that
ff. 1-4 of AM 564a (Items 5-7) are a later addition and should be placed at
the end of the codex. Three leaves would probably then be missing between
AM 445b f.ll and AM 445c, I,f.2, but since AM 445b, ff.8,9 are also likely to
have been in the middle of a quire, this would also create quiring problems.
I have not yet found any significant evidence to decide this question either
way.
