SUMMARY
This paper describes the relationship between the winter climate and
winter damages on cultivated grassland in northern Iceland. By using
damage scores in certain districts and climatic observation from the
nearest meteorological stations, the effect of different climatic facors
on the winter damages were observed. Correlation coefficients between
the damages and different climatic factors were found, and graphs
showing the major climatic conditions with and between years and
districts were studied.
The main results were as follows:
1. The winter damages are greatest in years with low temperature
and great precipitation during the winter preiode (dec-march).
These years are snowy and factors connected with snow showed
closer correlation with the damages (r=0.60***) than temperature
and precipitation factors. The correlation between the winter
damages and these snow factors is indirect as melting periods
often change the snow into ice-pans.
2. The correlation between winter damages and ice-pan factors was
still closer (r=0,70***) than the correlation between the damages
and the direct snow factors. The three most important factors
causing winter damages were long ice-pan periodes, short melting
periods and great amounts of melting water.
3. It seems likely that starvation under the ice-pan formations is
the most important cause of the winter damages in cultivated
grassland in northern Iceland. Drying and freezing in the spring
might possibly also be of some importance in the respect.
