CHEMICAL SEDIMENT VARIABLES FROM THE FAROE AREA:
ORCANIC CONTENT, NITROGEN, PHOSPHORUS, ZINC, AND COPPER
Discussion
From the data presented in this paper, it may
be concluded that chemical variables of
seabed sediments in Faroese shallow waters
can vary widely within short distances and
even within the same locality. Sandy sedi-
ments can contain as low as 0.5 % organic
matter, while muddy clay from the deeper
parts of the fjords may contain as high as
13.8 %. The data indicates a tendency for in-
creasing organic matter in the sediments
from the shallow to the deeper regions of the
fjords (Table 1 and Fig. 2.a). The opposite is
the case with the concentration of zinc (Fig.
3.e and 3.f) and to a lesser degree with phos-
phorous (Fig. 3.c). The content of nitrogen
and copper do not show any relation to
depth (Fig. 3.a, b, g, h)
In Table 12 and 13, an effort has been
made to compare LOI values from the same
locality over a longer period of time. All six
localities showed variable LOI values from
