SUMMARY
The paper explores Basil Bernstein’s idea of the significance of language for social
structure. Several of his hypotheses about the relationship between language, social
classes and scholastic achievement were tested. Data were collected from 338 fifteen
years old Icelanders from the Reykjavík area. No relationship was found between e-
laborated language and social class on one hand, and elaborated language and scholastic
achievement on the other. Further, no relationship was found between elaborated lan-
guage and verbal intelligence. However, scholastic achievement, IQ and social class
were found to be significantly intercorrelated (r ranged from .15 to .36). It was conclu-
ded that Bernstein’s hypotheses were not supported by the data.
