directed against women (against whom violence may not be committed): he
first blocks the people at Laugar from access to their toilet (“bannaði öllum
mönnum útgöngu og dreitti þau inni þrjár nætur”), and then he prevents
Guðrún and Bolli from buying the farm at Tunguland (both in ch. 47). In
this way the feud escalates to the point where Guðrún must retaliate by
bringing about the death of Kjartan. Feuding is not only a man’s business in
the sagas; see the remark by Roberta Frank cited above. Women frequently
play an active behind-the-scenes role; here in Laxdæla saga one of the
principals is a woman; in Njals saga, chs. 35-45, both the principals
(Hallgerður and Bergþóra) are women.
Laxdæla saga as feminist protest
This paper has been arguing for the woman-centeredness of Laxdœla saga,
but there is a doctrine gaining currency in Iceland that sees this focus on
women in a different way, as a protest against the limited social role assigned
to women. This doctrine has been expressed in at least three places, which I
will attempt to summarize, and then take issue with.
Helga Kress (1980) seems to have been the first to express this idea, and
took as a central expression of it the scene where Kjartan tells Guðrún that
he is planning to travel abroad.
Litlu síðar ríður Kjartan til Lauga og segir Guðrúnu utanferð sína.
Guðrún mælti: „Skjótt hefir þú þetta ráðið Kjartan."
Hefir hún þar um nokkur orð þau er Kjartan mátti skilja að Guðrún lét sér
ógetið að þessu.
Kjartan mælti: „Lát þér eigi þetta mislíka. Eg skal gera annan hlut svo að þér
þyki vel.“
Guðrún mælti: „Entu þetta því að eg mun brátt yfir því lýsa.“
Kjartan bað hana svo gera.
Guðrún mælti: „Þá vil eg fara utan með þér í sumar og hefir þú þá yfir bætt við
mig þetta bráðræði því að ekki ann eg íslandi.“
„Það má eigi vera,“ segir Kjartan. „Bræður þínir eru óráðnir en faðir þinn
gamall og eru þeir allri forsjá sviptir ef þú ferð af landi á brott og bíð mín þrjá
vetur."
Guðrún kvaðst um það mundu engu heita og þótti sinn veg hvoru þeirra og

This scene reveals, according to Helga, not only the separate roles of the
sexes but a woman’s desire to break out of her confined role and a man’s
natural determination to push her back into it. “Heimurinn er karlmannsins,
konan á að vera á sínum stað” (1980:102). The clearest example of Guðrún’s
rebelliousness, according to Helga Kress, occurs on her wedding day to
Þorkell when she calls on her followers to resist Þorkell’s attempt to lay
