Lesandi fólk er friðsamt; lesandi fólk stendur ekki í
styrjöldum.
Bókabæjarævintýrið breiðist út. Bókabæir voru
stofnaðir í Redu í Belgíu árið 1984 og í Montolieu í
Frakklandi árið 1989. Eftir 1990 hafa nær 20 bæir í
öllum heimsálfum nema Afríku bæst í hópinn. Fjær-
land í Noregi varð fyrsti norræni bókabærinn 1996,
árið eftir bættist Sysmá í Finnlandi við og árið 2001
var fyrsti bókabærinn í Svíþjóð stofnaður í Mellösa.
Richard Booth er heiðursforseti alþjóðlegu bókabæja-
samtakanna. Og Ríkharður bókhjarta er boðinn og
búinn til að rétta mönnum hjálparhönd: „Find a smaU
town in Iceland that can be a Book town" áritaði hann
eintak mitt af ævisögu sinni My Kingdom of Books og
kvaðst koma til íslands þegar bærinn væri fundinn.
Það er því bara að bretta upp ermarnar.

Summary
The Town of Books at Hay-on-Wye
The article tells the history of the Town of Books at Hay-on-
Wye, Wales, begun in 1962 by Richard Booth. After four
decades of bookish evolution Hay-on-Way’s 38 antiquarian
bookshops attract thousands and thousands of tourists and
book-lovers from all over the world who visit the town and
browse through over a million books in stacks. The moral of
the story is that an old book is as good reading as a new one,
and through his activities Booth has saved more books from
destruction than most people and brought the books into
the hands of readers.The idea ofTown of Books has spread
throughout the world and by now over 20 Towns of Books
can be found in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.
Richard Booth has offered his assistance in starting a Town
of Books in Iceland as soon as a suitable small town has
been found.
