Lokaorð
Útgáfa ISO 15489 í október 2001 er vissulega merkis-
atburður í sögu skjalastjórnar. Við samningu staðals-
ins hefur verið safnað saman mikilli reynslu í skjala-
stjórn og hann skýrir hvernig best skuli staðið að
verki.
þ.e.a.s. skjala á pappír, filmum, diskum og böndum.

Summary
A new standard for Records Management
The publication of the new standard ISO 15489: 2001:
Information and Documentation - Records Management in
October of 2001 is certainly a landmark in the history of
records management. In writing the standard, a wealth of
experience in records management has been collected to
explain best practices in the field. The standard should
therefore be read and studied by everyone involved in
records management.
The standard applies to records in any medium or
format. However, records managed by archival institutions
are not covered. The standard covers on the other hand all
aspects of records management from definitions of terms to
counting the benefits obtained from such a system. The
standard discusses in detail the records management
requirements, the design and implementation of a records
system, the processes and controls involved in such a
system, the monitoring and auditing of the system and
finally, the training needed to operate it successfully. The
publication is in two parts. Part 1 is the standard and Part 2
are the guidelines which were written to give guidelines on
the implementation of the standard.
The articles covers the various sections of the standard
and reviews at the same time the guidelines given for each
section. It is a critical evaluation of the standard based on
experience from current best practice in records
management in Iceland. The conclusion is that the standard
puts forward a standardized procedures for managing the
flow of records in the age of information. It offers also help
in making certain that records are indeed a proof of what
really happened. Organizations may have an etemal life. It
is, therefore, important that records preserve their history,
will be available in legal defence, will meet the regulations
and demands of the government, and last but not least, will
be readily available so that the business of the day can be
transacted for the benefit of the organization and the
customer.
