Icelandic writers who liave written in foreign langnages
or been translated such as Jóhann Sigurjónsson, Guð-
mundur Kamban, Cunnar Gunnarsson, Halldór Kiljan
Laxness, Jónas Guðlaugsson, Tryggvi Sveinbjörnsson,
Kristmann Guðmundsson, Bjarni M. Gíslason and others.
Such cuttings, reviews, articles and interviews are in the
hundreds. There are also large numbers of articles by va-
rious of these authors e. g. Gunnar Gunnarsson which are
difficult to obtain. There are many articles and cuttings
hy other well-known Icelanders who have lived many
years abroad, for example Finnur Jónsson, Valtýr Guð-
mundsson, Bogi Melsteð and others. There are both spe-
cially printed articles on scientific subjects, reviews of
them and other articles hy these men on numerous suh-
jects. The most remarkable collection of cuttings is „The
Icelandic Struggle for Independence“. In this are articles
frorn Danish papers on this subject, 225 all told from
1856 to 1944. Many of them are from the private collec-
tion of Knud Berlin.
It is unnecessary to mention that it would be difficult
to find in one place so much material on the Danish point
of view on Icelandic affairs for almost a whole century.
In addition are many articles on the sarne subject by in-
dividual men.
What has been said here about the material of this ca-
talogue should be enough to show that we have here a te-
markahle bibliographical work. Here details of books and
works hardly available anywhere else and for this reason
it is invaluable to bibliographers as a work of reference.
Especially it is of great value to collectors.
Those who collect books have often been up against the
fact that there has been no handbook to guide them. The
Fiske Collection catalogue has been the only one avail-
able and this has been difficult to come by.
The catalogue of the collection of Gunnar Hall is íhe
first which has been prepared of Icelandic books aud
books dcaling with Iceland other than the Fiske catalo-
gue. It will be a most valuable handbook for all who have
to do with libraries both individuals and librarians, and
it will be of inestimable value to bibliographers who spo-
cialize in Icelandic Sagas and Literature.
