GERT VIÐ SNORRALAUG 23 purpose of examining a bath which was built nearly 600 years ago by the celebrated Snorro Sturleson. The bath is a circular bason, con- structed of stones, apparently without any cement, but nicely fitted together. It is about fourteen feet in diameter, and altogether about six feet deep, the water being allowed to fill it to the depth of about four feet. The hot water is brought from a spring about 100 yards distant, by means of a covered conduit, which has been somewhat in- jured by an earthquake. We were told that cold water had been brought to it, so that, by mixing the hot and cold together, any de- sired temperature might be obtained. All round the inside, a little way under the surface of the water, was a row of projecting stones, placed apparently to serve the purpose of steps. Steps were construc- ted as an entrance to the bath, close to the orifice by which the hot water entered. At present it is not much used, and the bottom is covered with vegetable matter and soil.“ 9) I lauslegri þýðingu: „Fórum við þangað til að skoða laug, sem hinn víðfrægi Snorri Sturluson byggði fyrir nærfellt 600 árum. G.] 7) Henry Holland, ferðafélagi Mackenzies, segir frá Reykholti og Snorralaug í dagbók sinni; farast honum svo orð: „We proceeded to this place for the purpose of examining an ancient bath, which has been constructed here for the reception of the hot water from an ad- joining spring. The bath is of very simple construction — a circular bason, 12 or 14 feet in diameter, & 3 or 4 in depth — with one channel 9) Travels in the Island of Iceland During the Summer of the Ycar MDCCCX.
