uneroded site in Thórsmörk and the only one which lies within the National Park. Four structures
are preserved: a 9 x 4 m dwelling, a 9 x 6 m enclosure and two small ruins, 4.5 x 3.5 m and 5.5 x
2.5 m.
The main conclusions to be drawn from this review are the following. The sites in Thórsmörk
are obviously those of a fairly extensive human occupation. An attempt at dating on the basis of
finds, puts the settlement there between the 9th or lOth centuries and the 12th or 13th, which does
not contradict what the literary sources say about settlement in Thórsmörk. At present it is not
possible to say how many of the sites were contemporary. The three eroded sites are obviously
old, but when Húsadalur was first settled is now not known. Because of the nearness of the two
Thurídarstadir sites, it seems possible that one was built from the other.
One of the main objects of this investigation has been to gather and collate what little in-
formation is left in the form of building remains on the sites in Thórsmörk. And one of the main
lessons drawn from it is the speed with which erosion is destroying this information and the
urgency of undertaking similar investigations on other inland sites in lceland.
