Hann starfaði við jarðhitadeild Orkustofnunar á árunum 1969–1978 en síðan við Háskóla Íslands, fyrst sem dósent en síðan sem prófessor. Við Háskólans Íslands hefur hann unnið við rannsóknir á jarðhita en einnig víða erlendis sem jarðhitasérfræðingur og ráðgjafi.
