Eldgos á íslandi koma fram í ískjörnum frá
Grænlandsjökli sem toppar í sýrumagni (H+ jón-
um). Súr úrkoma hefur fallið á jökulinn en aska
hefur ekki náð að berast frá eldgosunum og sést
því ekki í ískjörnunum. Sýnd eru merki um gosin
í Lakagígum 1783 (4. mynd)., Kötlu 1179 (6.
mynd), Heklu 1104 (7. mynd) og Eldgjá 934 (5.
mynd), og rætt um gosin Heklu III (fyrir um 3000
árum), Heklu IV (fyrir um 4600 árum) og Heklu
V (fyrir um 7400 árum).
Greinin er tileinkuð minningu Sigurðar Þórar-
inssonar, brautryðjandans í öskulagarannsókn-
um.
