Vefbókasafnið. www.vefbokasafnid.is Vefur Verkefnisstjórnar um stafrænt efni www.hvar.is Summary Information gateways - subject-based access to digi- tal materialsresources The article sums up the possibilities researchers have when searching for digital materialsresources on the Intemet, whith a special focus on Subject-based information gateways (SBIG). A defmition of SBIG is given and then an overwiev of the efforts in four Nordic countries ; Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland, to build information gateways or „virtual libraries". The author concludes that an Icelandic „electronic library" could be built as a collective effort of Icelandic rea- search and public libraries, providing a framework for subject- based access to digital materials. She suggests that with the support of the academic community, such a project could be financed as a part of the country’s research funding. D.H. mm T BÓKASAFNIÐ 26. ÁRG. 2002 33
