Þegar líða tók að nóni fóru menn að taka við sér á Landsbókasafni og ættfræðíngar komu á vettváng til þess
að gánga úr skugga um að A gat B, oft kvenmannslaust; en væri kvenmaður viðbendlaður gat alteins verið um
rángfeðrun að ræða. Leiðin var ekki nema tveggja mínútna gángur af Vegamótastíg niðrá Landsbókasafn, ef farin
var skemsta leið svo lítið bar á ofan Traðarkotssund. Þó gat maður hvílt sig á leiðinni neðst í Sundinu á drykkjukrá
sem þar var rekin af konu ofanúr Kjós; þar komu lærðir menn og heimspekingar, svo og embættismenn og
stjórnmála, og voru að fá sér gosdrykk, en höfðu sjálfir veitíngar í vasa sínum, volgan spírítus concentratus eftir
lyfseðli frá læknum sínum, ellegar koges, og heltu þessu í hjá sér undir borðinu samanvið alvont límonaði og varð
þá til drykkur sem hét dúndur eða þessháttar, og ég nenni ekki að rifja upp frekar (hét kanski eitthvað enn ljótara).
Stundum komu götufylliraftar þarna inn, en lago með þá. Afturámóti vorum við hálfhræddir við fíleflda sjómenn.
Ur þessu inni var steinsnar í Landsbókasafn, skáhalt yfir Hverfisgötu. Oft komst ég alla leið inní lessalinn án þess
að mæta nokkrum sem var líklegur til að heilsa mér glaðklakkalega og segja: jaso þú ert hættur í skóla; en
bekkjarbræður mínir komu hér ekki fyren á kvöldin að heya sér fróðleik úr uppsláttaritum. Oft sat ég þarna
klukkutímum saman einn ásamt ættfræðíngum sem hafa orð fyrir að vera mestir neftóbaksmenn í heimi, og reyndi
um tíma að fara í hásnýtukapp við þaá eftir þeirri æfíngu sem ég hafði haft í Mentaskólanum. Aldrei létu bókaverðir
sem þeir könnuðust við mig þó ég kæmi þángað um leið og lokið var upp og færi seinastur á kvöldin.

SUMMARY
Dewey Decimal Classification 21st ed: changes. Dewey for
Windows.
The article begins with a general introduction to recent revisions of
DDC. Describes the main changes in the 21 st ed. and the work involved
in reclassification at the National and University Library of Iceland. It
recounts the main reasons for changes in the relevant categories and
describes the broader emphasis on an international point of view due to
wider use of the system. A longterm plan aiming at reducing United
States and Christian bias is in progress. Describes Dewey for Windows
and compares it to the first online edition of DDC, the Electronic
Library. The article discusses various search methods and concludes by
expressing the wish that Dewey for Windows will soon replace the
printed edition in all ways.
