Library and Information Science (Students may take up to 5 credits of elective reading
courses with their supervisor.)

Library and Information Science
Of these courses, at least the following are required: Landsbókasafn íslands - Há-
skólabókasafn: Hlutverk, starfsemi og þjónusta / National and University Library:
Functions, Activities and Services (2e), Borgarbókasafn Reykjavíkur: Hlutverk, starf-
semi og þjónusta / Reykjavík City Library: Functions, Activities and Services (2e),
the MLIS Málstofa / Seminar Series (le), one elective or reading course (2e or 3e),
and the Hagnýtt verkefni / Practical Project (5e). However, these requirements may be
varied as specified below for students who are writing an MLIS thesis in the fíelds of
either Records Management or School Librarianship.
MLIS Thesis (15e)
Students will complete an MLIS thesis based on a topic in the field of Library and
Information Science, as agreed with the supervisor.
For Students Writing a Thesis in the Field of Records Management:
For Upplýsingaleiðir II / Information Sources II, students will substitute the course
Skjalastjóm / Records Management (5e).
For a combination of reading courses or the Practical Project, students will substitute
the course Skjalastjóm og stjómun þekkingar og gæða / Records Management and the
Management of Knowledge and Quality (5e).
For Students Writing a Thesis in the Field of School Librarianship:
For either Upplýsingaleiðir II / Information Sources II or a combination of reading
courses, students will substitute the Skólasöfn / School Libraries (5e) course.
Elective Courses from Outside the Department:
With the permission of the Library and Information Science Committee, students may
take one or more elective courses from outside the Department. The following are
currently-approved electives:
• 10.53.12 Þjónustumat (5e). Uppeldis- og menntunarfræðiskor
• 10.59.12 Menningarstjómun: Stjómun menningarstofnana og menningarstjómsýsla
(3e). Stjómmálafræðiskor
Entry Requirements:
In August 2004, the maximum number of new students entering the MLIS programme
will be restricted to 30 (not including students currently registered in “Starfsréttindi”).
Applicants for the MLIS programme in 2004 will be evaluated according to the
following criteria:
• Applicants who have completed a bachelors degree in another field with a grade
average of 7.25 or above (a first class degree), and who have passed three Aðferðafræði
/ Methodology courses (to 12e) or equivalent, will be accepted.
• Applicants who have a grade average of above 7.25 (a first class degree) and a pass in
three Aðferðafræði / Methodology courses (to 12e) or equivalent and are about to com-
plete their bachelors degree will be accepted conditional upon completing their bache-
lors degree studies on time and with an average of 7.25 or above.
• A pass in three Aðferðafræði / Methodology courses (to 12e) or equivalent (one of
which can be a qualitative methods course) is normally required for entry. However,
