<The ultimate monograph on the natural history of
the great auk (Alca impennis), a large, flightless,
penguin-like member of the Alcidae-family native
to the northern hemisphere which became extinct
in 1844. In the Faroes the last specimen of the great
auk was allegedly seen on Stóra Dímun in 1808. The
