Hóraldur Joensen: Discrimination cunongfish species ancl stocks by
multivariate analysis offatty acicl profiles in selected tissues.
Dr. scient. thesis. Department of Chemistry. University of Bergen. 105 pp + 4 accompany-
ing papers.
Tann 02. juli 2002 vardi Hóraldur Joensen, evnafrøðingur, doctor- scientiarum-ritgerð á
Universitetinum í Bergen. Fyrsti og annar opponentur vóru ávikavist professor John Sar-
gent, Institute of Aquaculture, University of Stirling, Scotland og professor Gunnar Nævdal,
Department of Fisheries and Marine Biology, University of Bergen. í dómsnevndini vóru
umframt nevndu opponentar eisini professor Tanja Barth, Department of Chemistry, Uni-
versity of Bergen.

Fitisýru-profil-hátturin er ein kemo-
metriskur analysuháttur, ið er samansettur
av methanolysu, gass-kromatografi av fiti-
sýrumethylestarum og multivariatari statist-

Abstract
Even though several different methods
have been used to identify and discriminate
among redfish species and stocks and cod
stocks in the North Atlantic there is still a
need for alternative, unambiguous identi-
fication methods to establish taxonomic
status of these species and stock for fish-
eries management purposes. Furthermore,
there is call for methods with resolving
power high enough to identify individual
specimens. The purpose of this project was
to examine if the fatty acid profile method
had the necessary discrimination power to
distinguish among redfish and cod at spe-
cies-level, stock-level and individual level.
The composition of fatty acids in select-
ed tissues of two populations of cod and
three redfish species, was delermined by
the fatty acid profile method: a chemomet-
ric method, consisting of methanolysis, gas
chromatography of the resulting fatty acid
methyl esters and multivariate statistical
treatment of the analytical data. The two
reared stocks of cod from the Faroe Bank
