SUMMARY
This aiticle reports on a research on spelling difficulties of Icelandic teenagers.
The authors have investigated examination papers from about 1000 Icelandic teena-
gers aged 15-16. It is maintained that five main factors affect people’s ability to spell
correctly: phonetic and phonological analysis; visual memory; morphological ana-
lysis; inflectional rules; and finally, features which cannot be derived by rules but must
simply be memorized. The knowledge of the last three factors can be strengthened by
teaching. The authors’ conclusion is that the most difficult words are those that must
be memorized.
