Hann hefur starfað hjá Náttúrufræðistofnun Íslands síðan 1969 og var um tíma forstöðumaður stofnunarinnar. Magnús Tumi Guðmundsson (f. 1961) lauk BS.-prófi í jarðeðlisfræði frá Háskóla Íslands 1986 og doktorsprófi frá University College London 1992. Hann starfaði á Raunvísindastofnun Háskólans við jöklarannsóknir 1991–1994, varð dósent í jarðeðlisfræði 1995 og prófessor 2002.
