August. Measurements in the small stream to the east
showed that during the same period, water temperature
remained nearly constant at just over 0°C, while con-
ductivity varied between 10.0 to 70.0 pS/cm.
Concurrent observations being made at a
meteorological station established by the expedition at
Kverkárnes, some 23 km. to the ENE of Kverkjökull
reveal some interesting data of relevance to the explan-
ation of the changes described above. At 1800h on 11
August, the observer reported a very strong smell of
sulphur. During the previous three hours, the wind had
been blowing steadily between 190° and 220°, and had
gradually decreased from 13.0 m/s at 1500h to 6.0 m/s at
1800h. These observations suggest that the source of the
sulphur smell was the Kverkfjöll caldera, and that the
time of its origin was slightly after 1700h. It is accor-
dingly postulated that a minor geothermal event
occured in the late afternoon of 11 August, and that this
event resulted in the changes in the englacial/subglacial
drainage system noted above.

event at 65°, 29.8’N, 17° 38.7’W (just east of Hamar-
