NOTES ON XESTIA ALPICOLA SSP. ATLANTICA NOV. ON THE FAROES 113 view this presence of elements from both adjacent a/p/co/a-populations in the Faroe race are suggestive of a clinal variation through the entire area. At the present stage of knowledge the small Faroe material does not permit any definite conclusions with re- gard to this important question. Until more material has been collected it seems most appropriate to maintain the isolated and de- viating Faroe population as a subspecies like the distinctive geometrid moth Eupi- thecia nanata zebrata (Wolff, 1929). Acknowledgements The author wants to thank his friends, Mr. Peter Gjel- strup from the Museum of Natural History in Aarhus, specialist in soil invertebrates, for good companionship during the field work on the Faroes, Mr. Mike Penning- ton, Baltasound on Unst, Shetland for valuable informa- tion on Xestia alpicola in Shetland and the Orkney Isles, and Professor, Dr. Niels Peder Kristensen, The Zoologi- cal Museum in Copenhagen (ZMUC) for providing access to study material of the species. A cordial acknowledgement is also extended to those persons who have been willing to cooperate with the author on the five light traps which have been in function on the Faroe Isles during the period 1990-1996: the crew on the Akraberg lighthouse and Mr. Eiler Djurhuus in Trongis- vágur, Suðuroy, Mr. Ola Jákup úr Dímun, Stóra Dímun, Mr. Oskar Oskarsson and Mr. Johannes Sørensen, Sand- ur on Sandoy, Mr. Jens-Kjeld Jensen, Nólsoy, Mr. Hav- grímur Gaasedal and Mr. Tróndur G. Leivsson, Tórs- havn, Mr. Atli Vilhelm on Kunoy and Mrs. Jenny and Mr. Selmar Lydersen, Viðareiði on Viðoy. The main study has been made possible by financial support and grants from Schiøtz-Christensens mindelegat, The Museum of Natural History in Aarhus, The University of Aarhus and The Carlsberg Foundation. Generous support and excellent working facilities throughout the years have also been given by Føroya Náttúrugripasavn in Tórshavn through the past director, the late Dr. Jóhannes Jóhansen, and its present director, Dr. Dorete Bloch.
