Library and Information Studies 1992 of the American Library Association, and the
Competencies for Special Librarians of the 21s' Century of the Special Libraries Asso-
ciation, as well as the requirements for higher degrees of the Faculty of Social Science
at the University of Iceland.
The MLIS is a first professional degree for people who will work as librarians, re-
cords managers, or information scientists and who already hold a fírst class degree in
another field. It replaces “Bókasafns- og upplýsingafræði til starfsréttinda (60e)”
which has been offered by the Department of Library and Information Science for a
number of years as a route to professional qualification for people who already hold a
fírst degree in another fíeld. The MLIS programme will be offered in parallel with the
BA degree in Library and Information Science (60 credits or 90 credits) as an altema-
tive first professional qualification.
Programme Requirements:
The MLIS programme requires 60 credits of study. Students will take core courses to
the value of 30 credits, plus 15 credits of practical/professional courses and practical
studies, and complete a 15 credit thesis on an aspect of Library and Information
Science.

Note that these core courses include two three-credit courses taught at the BA level,
Lyklun / Indexing (3e) and Skráning / Cataloguing (3e) to a total of six credits.
