skipa nú veglegan sess innan efnafræðinn-
ar og ljóst er að ný lönd, eða jafnvel
heimsálfa, hafa verið numin. Mörg stór-
fyrirtæki rannsaka nú knattkol en enn sem
komið er virðast hagnýt not af þeim ekki
vera fyrirsjáanleg (Baum 1993). Þó verður
að hafa í huga að aðeins hafa verið tekin
fyrstu sporin inn í hin nýju lönd og líklegt
er að þrautseigja og hugvit landkönnuða
eigi eftir að skila miklum árangri.
