existence of an anticyclonic circulation around Faroe
Bank during three periods of 1986-1989, and also
showed a predicted self-contained circulation in the
upper waters of the Faroe Bank Channel. Upon the

isobaths and were largely consistent with the clas-

graphic data show that the flow of water from the
depth of the Nordic Seas into the Atlantic Ocean has
decreased by at least 20% since 1950. The implica-
tions of this decrease depend on the behaviour of
other overflow sources. But if not counteracted by
an increased flow from elsewhere, the fall could lead
to a reduced inflow into the deep Atlantic Ocean.
Given that the heat transported by the Atlantic
Ocean circulation gives rise to the exceptionally
mild climate of norlhwestern Europe, the trend could
have profounđ implications for European climate if
