Anne-Kari Skarðhamar forsvarte sin avhandling Poetikk og livs-
tolkning i Christian Matras’ lyrikk - med et tillegg om Matras
ogfærøysk lyrikk for graden Doctor artium i nordisk litteratur
ved Det historisk-filosofiske fakultet, Institutt for nordistikk og
litteraturvitenskap ved Universitetet i Oslo 17.februar 2001.

Avhandlingen behandler Christian Matras’
(1900-1988) lyriske forfatterskap med vekt
pá beskrivelse av poetikk og livstolkning.
Resonnementene bygger pá diktanalyser
med støtte i biografiske og kulturhistorisk
materiale.
Avhandlingen omfatter tre hoveddeler.
Innledningen gir en oversikt over Christian
Matras’ litterære forfatterskap, biografi
og kulturbakgrunn. Annen del analyserer
Matras’ poetikk. Poetikken blir tolket ut
fra diktene, báde metapoetiske dikt, dikt
som indirekte gir uttrykk for metapoetiske
synspunkter, og ut fra dikt om andre dik-
tere. Tredje del analyserer diktenes utsagn
om livstolkning og behandler erindringens
betydning og naturens funksjon i Matras’
lyrikk.
Barndomserfaringer av natur og kultur-
tradisjon er grunnleggende for Christian
Matras’ diktning, slik at en kan betegne
hans poetikk som en erindringens poetikk.
Middelalderballader er en komponent i
færøysk kulturtradisjon som Matras forhol-
der seg til og fornyer i sin diktning. Han
henter ogsá forbilder fra andre lyrikere. Ut-

The thesis Poetikk og livstolkning i Chris-
tian Matras ’ lyrikk med et tillegg om Mat-
ras ogfærøysk lyrikk deals with the poetry
of Christian Matras with an emphasis on
the description of poetics and of interpre-
tation of life. The arguments are based on
a close reading of a number of poems and
are supported by biographical and cultural
information.
The thesis consists of three main parts.
The introduction gives a survey of Chris-
tian Matras’ literary production, life and
background. The second part gives an anal-
ysis of his poetics. The poetics of Christian
Matras are interpreted from his metapoeti-
cal poems as well as from poems that indi-
rectly express ideas of poetics. Poems to or
about other poets also contribute to his po-
etical theory. The third part of the thesis ex-
amines the interpretation of life expressed
in poems and describes the importance of
memory and nature in Christian Matras’
poetry.
Childhood experiences of nature and
cultural tradition seems to have had a vi-
tal imporlance for the poet, and his poetics
may be described as a poetics of memory.
