B. WETLAND VEGETATION
The groundwater level remains close to
the soil surface or above the plant root
system. The soil is deep, most frequently
with high content of organic matter. This
group of plant communities is among
those most extensive in Iceland. It com-
prises three main plant communities.
I. Sloping bogs
The groundwater is slow moving and
the plant roots are never totally sub-
merged. The slopes of the soil vary from
almost level to steep, and the surface is
almost always hummocky. This com-
munity includes a great variety of plant
species, and mosses are prevalent. It com-
prises four main associations:
Carex bog;
Trichophorum bog;
Equisetum bog;
Dwarf shrub bog.

II. Level bogs (fens).
The soil surface is level, the groundwater
stagnant, and the plant root system sub-
merged in water, at least for some part of
the year. This plant community, which
covers fairly extensive areas, comprises
few plant species and in may instances
few mosses. It includes three main assoc-
iations:
Eriophorum angustifolium bog;
Carex rostrata bog;
Carex Lyngbyei bog.
III. Freshwater vegetation.
Thrives in shallow lakes and ponds and
often forms continuous vegetation cover.
The demarcation lines between aquatic
vegetation and level bog vegetation are
often indistinct.
