Tuttugasta og fyrsta ársþing Þjóð- ræknisfélags íslendinga í Vesturheimi var sett í Good Templarahúsinu á Sar- gent Ave., kl. laust fyrir 10 að morgni hins 19. febr. 1940. Á fundi voru staddir fulltrúar frá deildum í Saskatchewan, Manitoba og Norður-Dakota. Auk þeirra félagsmenn búsettir í Winnipeg og gest- ir víðsvegar að. Með því að forseti fé- iagsins, Dr. Rögnvaldur Pétursson hafði andast 30. janúar næst á undan, tók vara-forseti félagsins, Dr. Richard Beck, að sér alla þingstjórn. Kallaði hann alla til sætis og bað þingheim að syngja sálminn: “Þú Guð ríkir hátt yfir hverf- leikans straum.” Gunnar Erlendsson sat við hljóðfærið og stýrði söngnum. Næst flutti séra Jakob Jónsson bæn. há voru þingstörf hafin með því að ritari las þingboðið, eins og það hafði hirtst í báðum íslensku blöðunum. Hljóðar það á þessa leið: Mr. Chairman. Members of the Icelandic National League. We are about to open an annual con- vention of the Icelandic National League, which naturally will be devoted largely to matters of particular interest to that body. But the Executive Com- mittee of our organization deems it prop- er, that we should, prior to the formal opening of our deliberations pause to pay homage to the memory of His Ex- cellency, the late Lord Tweedsmuir, Governor General of Canada, the Repre- sentative in this Dominion of His Majesty, the King, the gracious honor- ary patron of the Icelandic National League, who passed away a week ago yesterday. While we are Icelanders, and as such cherish our cultural heritage, we are not unmindful of our duties to the coun- tries of our adoption, whether Canada or the United States. The record of our people down through the decades shows unmistakable manifestations of that loyalty. This brief moment of memorial meditation is yet another link in that historic chain of abiding loyalty. We, who are citizens or residents of Canada, feel deeply the loss of Lord Tweedsmuir, and I am convinced that our friends and compatriots from across the border can fully appreciate our sentiments. His Excellency had been the Governor General of Canada since 1935. During that time he had endeared himself to our citizens, of high and low station alike. He was greatly interested in this young country, its progress and development, and showed that interest by extensive travels which took him into practically every section of the Dominion, including our own Icelandic
