these trips he became increasingly
popular. This was due to his unusual
gift of eloquence which he used gener-
ously for the inspiration of the com-
munities visited, and in order to impress
upon the people of this country the
meaning and strength of a true demo-
cracy, and the true meaning of nation-
hood. His popularity was also due to
his democratic spirit, which enabled
him to move freely and with equal ease
among the aristocrats of the east, and
the fishermen, the farmers, the pros-
pectors of the west and north country.
Again, his popularity was due to his
broad human sympathies, his interest
in people, their problems, their hopes
and aspirations. He was a prolific
writer, some 60 volumes have come
from his pen. As a poet, a biographer,
and as a teller of tales he never forgot
the guiding principle of all great writ-
ers: that the true study of mankind is
man.
The personal history of Lord Tweeds-
muir holds a peculiar fascination for the
common people of all nations. His life
is really symbolic of the achievements
possible in a true democracy. He rose,
so to speak from the ranks of the com-
mon people, but due to his ability, his
unimpeachable personal character, his
honesty and kindly spirit, he attained
one of the highest stations of honor and
trust, within the power of a great
Empire to bestow.
The sentiments of this body of Ice-
landic Canadians is appropriately ex-
pressed in a message of condolence,
wired Her Excellency, Lady Tweeds-
muir on the occasion of the Governor’s
death:

Government House, Ottawa.
The memory of Lord Tweedsmuir will
be forever linked with that of Dufferin
in minds of all Canadians of Icelandic
origin. We deeply mourn the loss of
our honorary patron, a great statesman,
and a warm personal friend. On behalf
of all Icelandic Canadians we extend
to you our deepest sympathy in your
bereavement.

Þegar séra Valdemar hafði lokið máli
sínu varð stutt þögn, og síðan sungið
“O Canada”. Að því loknu flutti vara-
forsetinn, Dr. Beck, ávarp sitt til þings-
ins, og fer það hér á eftir.

sem eftirsjáin hefir kveikt í því.”
Þannig farast Guðmundi skáldi Frið-
jónssyni orð í einu hinna meitluðu og
spaklegu eftirmæla sinna, og þær ljóð-
línur hafa sótt fast á mig, þegar til
þess kom að semja setningarræðuna
fyrir þetta þing; en vegna þeirra at-
burða, sem nýlega hafa gerst innan fé-
lags vors, hlaut hún óhjákvæmilega að
slá á strengi saknaðar og eftirsjár.
Yður er öllum kunnug ástæðan til
þess, að eg ávarpa yður frá þessum
stað hér í dag: fráfall vors mikilhæfa
og mikilsvirta forseta, dr. Rögnvaldar
Péturssonar. Engin þörf gerist að skýra
fyrir þeim, sem hér eru saman komnir,
hver máttarstólpi hann var Þjóðrækn-
isfélaginu frá stofnun þess og fram að
dánardægri, bæði með margþættum
störfum sínum sem æðsti embættis-
maður þess árum saman og sem ritstjóri
Tímarits þess frá því að það hóf göngu
sína fyrir 20 árum síðan, auk ótal ann-
ara nytsemdarstarfa, stærri og smærri, í
þarfir félagsins. En það einkendi hann,
eins og alla aðra þá menn, sem bera
einlæglega fyrir brjósti einhverja stóra
hugsjón, að hann var altaf reiðubúinn
til þess, að verja tíma sínum og starfs-
kröftum í þágu vorra sameiginlegu á-
hugamála, íslenskra þjóðræknis og
þjóðræktarmála hérna megin hafsins.
