1) Patients (104) who underwent subtotal
thyroidectomy several years prior to the
Study.
2) Patients (23) who were given radioiodine as
a treatment for thyreotoxicosis.
3) Subjects (10) with normal thyroid function
but circulating thyroid antibodies.
4) Control group (107).
The TSH values for euthyroid subjects post
thyroidectomy and post radioiodine were signi-
ficantly higher than in the control group. Sub-
jects with circulating thyroid antibodies had an
increased response to TRH compared to con-
trols.
It is concluded that TSH is mainly useful
for excluding hypothyroidism, and euthyroid
subjects can have elevated TSH values up to
30 ag/ml. Those subjects though run a higher
risk of developing hypothyroidism later on
than subjects with low TSH.
