century ago about the value of confessions of faith is discussed but the main
emphasis lies on Old Testament credos. Gerhard von Rad’s theory about „the little
historical credo“ as the roots of the Hexateuch is also presented. Even though von
Rad’s theories have not enjoyed as much support in recent years as they once did,
there is no question about the fact that credos play an important role in the Old
Testament. Some of these credos are taken into consideration and it is shown that
their roots can be traced to different aspects of the religious life of the people. From
the Old Testament credos we can therefore draw the conclusion that confessions
of faith have an important role to play but also that different situations demand
new credos, even though the most important elements remain unaltered.
