í þessari grein er greint frá tveimur mikilvægum prestastefnum sem Þórhallur
kallaði til á fyrstu árum sínum í biskupsembætti. A báðum prestastefnunum kom
í ljós að prestatéttin vildi halda fast við þá stefnu sem milliþinganefndin hafði
markað meðan biskupinn tók áfram virkan þátt í aðskilnaðarumræðunni og var
því nokkuð róttækari en kirkjan að öðru leyti.
Auk þess að umræður um sjálfstæða kirkju í tengslum við ríkisvaldið eða
aðskilnað hennar frá ríkinu eru greindar er hér gerð grein fyrir bakgrunni presta-
stefnanna á Þingvöllum 1909 og á Hólum 1910 en þær voru merkir viðburðir í
starfi íslensku þjóðkirkjunnar á fyrsta áratug 20. aldar.
English summary
This is the third article in a series of articles on the early twentieth century struggle
for independent national church lead by a general synod.
In the first article it was demonstrated how the policy of independent national
church in continuing relationship with the state was made by the intersessional
committee of the parliament 1904-06. In the second article it was argued that
Þórhallur Bjarnarson, which became a bishop in 1908, was already before the turn
of the century committed to a more radical policy and viewed the separation of
church and state as a desirable goal.
In this article two important synods called by Þórhallur Bjarnarson in the early
years of his office are reviewed. In both synods it is evident that the ministerial
class was committed to the policy of the intersessional committee but the bishop
continued to participate in the discussion about separation and thereby being more
radical than the church at large.
In addition to the debate about the relationship between church and state this
article discusses the background of the synods of Þingvellir 1909 and Hólar 1910.
Both of these were important milestones in the development of the Icelandic
national church in the first decade of the twentieth century.
