SUMMARY.
Traction power requirements for ploughing.

In this report results of studies into the tracti-
on power requirements of ploughs are pres-
ented. The purpose of the measurements was
to determine the power requirements for
ploughing on different types of soils and
also to investigate what sizes of ploughs
would be most suitable for a range of tract-
ors under Icelandic conditions. It is consider-
ed that the soil types included in the study
are representative of the different soils which
are normally selected for cultivation in the
country.
All the soil types studied may be classi-
fied as „difficult soils" according to the
Scandinavian classfication „svær jord", i.e. the
traction power is in the range of 40—60
kp/dm2. The highest traction power mea-
sured was on a newly drained peat soil but
the lowest on a sandy soil and also on a
peat soil which had been drained 10 years
previously (well drained). Traction force inde-
pendet of speed appeared in most cases to
be in the range of 35—38 kp/dm2 and the
