98 ÍSLENZKAR LANDBÚNAÐARRANNSÓKNIR Þetta mat er bæði leitt af þeim rann- sóknum á plöntuvali, sem gerðar hafa verið hérlendis, og athugunum, sem gerð- ar hafa verið í sambandi við gróðurrann- sóknirnar. Samkvæmt því, sem að framan greinir, mundi beitargildi þetta breytast mjög, ef verið væri að meta tegundirnar fyrir haust eða vetrarbeit. Gildið væri ekki heldur hið sama, ef um aðrar búíjárteg- undir væri að ræða. T. d. mundi beitar- gildi gulstarar og fergins vera í hámarki fyrir nautgripi og sömuleiðis beitargildi grasvíðis og annarra lyng- og smárunna- tegunda, ef um hreindýr væri að ræða. Environmental data The eífects and interactions of some en- vironmental factors on the plant com- munities and their production have been studied. These factors are parent mate- rial, soil characteristics such as soil texture, soil structure, soil depth and soil moisture and surface characteristics, such as slope, exposure, height above sea level and climatic factors. Botanical composition of plant communities The vegetation in Iceland has, for map- ping purposes, been classified into 13 main plant communities which in turn contain a number of subgroups according to dominant plant species. Sumar teg- undir eru oft svo lágvaxnar, að sauðfé nær illa til þeirra, t. d. blóðberg og brjóstagras. Þessar tegundir fá því lága einkunn fyrir beitargildi, og þær geta í sjálfu sér verið lostætari en einkunnin bendir til. Sumar tegundir eru nær eingöngu bitnar á sumum árstímum, en öðrum ekki, og þeim verður að gefa meðaleinkunn. Þetta á t. d. við um melgras, sem sauðfé bítur fyrst á vorin og á veturna, en lítið á sumrin. The botanical composition of the plant communities represents to only a limited degree climax or potential vegetation. This is mainly due to prolonged and ex- tensive overgrazing and other abuse of the vegetation which has resulted in great botanical changes and erosion and left the vegetation in the present deteriorated state. In addition to the protected areas, undisturbed vegetation is found only in remote parts of the country, where it has been lightly grazed or protected from grazing. On open rangelands only the vegatation of the fens, which are scarcely grazed, represents climax. Decreased grazing pressure of deteric- rated rangelands usually results in a fairly rapid increase in palatable plant species such as grasses, forbs, trees and shrubs. Birch and willow woodlands are considered to be the climax vegetation of most of the drylands up to 300—400 m elevation.
