reyna, eru lagðir á sjúkrahús. Á árinu 1976 eru þeir 98, sem sendir voru af
göngudeild slysadeildar, eða tæplega 2 á viku hverri og rúmlega helmingur,
eða 56% þeirra sem tilraun gerðu. Af þeim fóru 40, eða 40.8% á geðdeild eða
geðspítala, 37 á lyflæknisdeild og 21 á gjörgæsludeild.
Af þessu er ljóst, að enda þótt hér sé aðeins um að ræða 0.5% þeirra, sem á
göngudeildina koma er hópurinn nokkuð fyrirferðarmikill og mjög fyrirhafna-
samur, þegar kemur inn á legudeildir sjúkrahúsanna.
7. Ekki er af þessari könnun hægt að fullyrða um fjölda sjálfsvígstilrauna hér
á landi á ári hverju, en sé gert ráð fyrir, að 60-70% allra tilrauna komi á
göngudeild slysadeildar Borgarspítalans gæti heildarfjöldi á landinu öllu á
ári verið 250-300.
Sé þetta borið saman við meðaltal sjálfsvíga hér á landi á árabilinu 1962-1973,
sem var ‘21.7 mundu sjálfsvígstilraunir vera 11 til 13 sinnum fleiri en
sjálfsvíg.
Summary
In the introduction the authors define the different words and concepts used in
suicidology and emphasize the suicidal behaviour and suicidal trend.
All suicidal attempts coming to the emergency department at Borgarspítalinn,
Reykjavík, in the year 1976 are investigated.
In the group there are 102 wanen and 73 men and this is only 0.58% of all pafients
coming to the department in 1976.
The investigation shows that the age group 20-29 years is largest and 61.7% are
in the age 20-39, and 74.3% under the age of 40 years.
In 95% of the groups the attempt is by drug or by cutting and drugs alone count
for nearly 3/4 of cases.
The drugs most frequently used are tranquillizers and sleeping pills, other than
barbiturates. 56% were admitted to different wards after acute treatment and
nearly 30% of the group was admitted to psychiatric warxl or hosDÍtal.
The women/men ratio for suicidal attempt (1.4/1.0) is markedly different from that
quoted for suicides (1/4).
It is not possible to say how many attempts are made every year in the whole country
but from this investigation we can estimate that the attempts are 250-300 in a year.
That is between 11 and 13 times the mean number of suicides in the years 1962-
1973, which was 21.7.
