lét sér mjög annt um skólamál. Árið 1908 fékk Carnegie
Foundation hann til að gera skýrslu um læknakennslu í
Bandaríkjunum, sem kom út 1910. í kjölfar skýrslunnar voru
gerðar miklar endurbætur á bandarískum læknaskólum.
Flexner lagði áherslu á mikilvægi tengsla á milli klíníkur,
kennslu og rannsókna í læknisfræði. Flexner hafði sem motto
„think much; publish little." Við flest háskólasjúkrahús nú
á tímum er meiri áhersla lögð á rannsóknir en kennslu. Nú
gildir reglan „publish or perish".

er skilgreind hér sem: „A neurotic disorder characterized
by fatigue, irritability, headache, depression, insomnia,
difficulty in concentration, and lack of capacity for enjoy-
ment (anhedonia)." Á íslensku hefur orðið neurasthenia
verið þýtt sem kvellislekja og taugaslen. Nú til dags eru sí-
þreyta og vefjagigt algengari sjúkdómsgreiningar fyrir
svipað ástand, og sjúklingar með þessa kvilla leita til
taugalækna eða gigtlækna fremur en geðlækna.

F. Thomas CC 1970: XIII-XV. í Þýskalandi var þess konar
prófessor kallaður Ordinarius til að aðskilja hann frá þeim,
sem hafði nafnbótina, en þáði ekki föst laun fyrir kennslu
sína. Sá nefndist Extraordinarius.
