Illustrerende i sá máte er «Velken-hornet» med
sin gjenspeiling av romansk stil sável som av
gotikkens forskjellige faser.
Gjennomgáelsen av motivene pá middel-
alderhornene har kanskje likevel brakt oss noen
skritt fremover pá veien mot en tidfesting.
Denne má fremdeles være vag og betraktes som
et forslag og ikke som en pástand:
«Ursula-hornet» og «St. Nikolaus-hornet»:
Forste halvdel av 1400-árene. «Love- og konge-
hornet»: Annen halvdel av 1400-árene.
«Nádestol-hornet»: Slutten av 1400-árene.
«Treenighetshornet», «St. Mikael-hornet» og
«Velken-hornet»: Begynnelsen av 1500-árene.
«Korsbæringshornet» og «Bispehornet»: Litt
senere i 1500-árene, henimot reformasjonstiden.
Nár vi forlater den middelalderske horn-
skurden og gár over til den etterreformatoriske,
folger imidlertid mange av middelaldermoti-
vene med. Det vil si at den tradisjonelle bruk av
«gammeldagse» forbilder fortsatte.

SUMMARY
The horn carvers were conservative, retaining
medieval styles well into modern times. This
makes it difficult to decide whether a drinking
horn is earlier or later than the breakthrough of
Protestantism in 1550, a date which is taken to
mark the end of the Middle Ages. The nine
drinking horns that are definitely medieval are
dealt with separately in this chapter
The figurative zones on the horns are de-
scribed first. Most of these are divided into
several fields, with the scenes separated by a
framework of architectural motifs, rings or trail-
ing foliage.
Figurative scenes make up the main subject-
matter on the horns. With one exception (fig
6-10) they are taken from the world of religion
4 and can be regarded as devotional. Only two
j4 are from the Old Testament: the Brazen Snake
in the Desert (fig 45, p 29) and the Tree of Jesse
(fig 44, p 30).
The New Testament subjects are (in chrono-
logical order) the Visitation (fig 49), Mary and
Child (figs 13 & 36), Anne with Mary and the
Christ-child (fig 12), John the Baptist (fig 13),
Christ Bearing the Cross (figs 41 & 43), Christ
on the Cross with Mary and John ( figs 34 and
42), Jesus as the Man of Sorrows, displaying his
wounds and flanked by angels with the instru-
ments of passion (fig 23, p 21). Two depictions
of the Trinity must be regarded as devotional
pictures of a more timeless character (figs 11 &
14). Finally, there is a heavily populated picture
of the Last Judgement (figs 21-23, p 21). As a
symbol of judgement and punishment there is
also a man being swallowed by a dragon, a
"soul in the jaws of hell", carved in the round
