Sömuleiðis sýna rannsóknir Hjartaverndar jákvæð áhrif hreyfingar í frístundum á heilsufar, sérstaklega lækkar dánartíðni af völdum hjarta- og æðasjúkdóma og líkur á heilaáföllum lækka einnig (40,41). Líkamsræktarstöðvum hefur fjölgað og svo virðist sem margir verji frístundum sínum til gönguferða, útivistar og íþrótta. Það er hins vegar ástæða til að ætla að slík íþróttaiðkun nái ekki nægilegri útbreiðslu meðal þeirra sem eru í mestri áhættu að fitna. Eins nær hún vart að vega upp á móti minni áreynslu við dagleg störf nema líkamsræktin sé því meiri. Sem dæmi um mikilvægi daglegra athafna má nefna að orkuþörfin fjórfaldast við að ganga á meðalhraða borið saman við að sitja í bíl og áttfaldast við að ganga upp stiga (41). Samantekt Hlutfall ofþyngdar og offitu jókst meðal 45-64 ára Reykvíkinga á árunum 1975-1994. Trúlegasta skýr- ingin er sú að ekki hafi tekist að aðlaga neyslu orku- efna að minni orkuþörf sem fylgir minni áreynslu nútíma lifnaðarhátta. Mikilvægt er að snúa þessari þróun við. Leggja þarf áherslu á forvarnir og stuðla að heilbrigðari lifnaðarháttum með því að hvetja til hollari neysluvenja og aukinnar hreyfingar. Heimlldir 1. World Health Organization (WHO).
