Hann starfaði hjá Orkustofnun 1975-1990 að jarðfræðikortlagningu og mannvirkjajarðfræði við fyrirhugaðar vatnsaflsvirkjan- ir. Ágúst hóf rekstur Jarðfræðistofu 1990 og hefur síðan þá starfað sjálfstætt, aðallega sem verktaki fyrir Lands- virkjun og Vegagerðina við undirbúning stórmannvirkja, virkjana og vegganga. Ágúst hefur stundað athuganir og skráningu á sífrera í fjöllum Íslands síðan um 1980 og hin síðari ár í samstarfi við vísindafólk í Noregi og Frakklandi.
