Geir Jónasson studied history at the University of Oslo where he obtained a mag. art. degree
in 1936. He worked in the National Library for 28 years (1944-72), his main responsibilities
being accessions, both collection of legal deposit and the acquisition offoreign material. Late in
life he became director of the Reykjavík City Archives.

Most of the letters then known to have been written by Jónas Hallgrímsson (1807-45), the
poet, were printed in his Collected Works, published in 1929-37. Since then several more
letters have been found and published. A letter and a fragment of a letter written by Jónas
Hallgrímsson to Brynjólfur Pétursson (1810—51) and a letter to Konráð Gíslason (1808—91) are
published here for the first time together with a letter from Jónas to J. Collin (1776—1861) and a
letter written by J. Steenstrup (1813-97) to Finnur Magnússon (1781-1847) on hearing the
news about Jónas Hallgrímsson’s death.

Guðmundur Finnbogason (1873-1944) was for a time professor in the University of Iceland,
the editor of the literary journal Skímir, the president of the Icelandic Literary Society, and
National Librarian, and participated actively in the cultural debate of the first decades of the
century. Several letters written to him by four prominent Icelandic scholars are printed here.
They were written in the period 1915-44 and are preserved in Guðmundur Finnbogason’s
personal archive. Those four scholars lived abroad for long periods and the letters throw light
on their views and outlook and scholarly endeavours. The scholars are Sigurður Nordal (1886-
1974) Professor of Icelandic Literature in the University of Iceland, Halldór Hermannsson
(1878-1958) Curator of the Fiske Icelandic Collection in Ithaca, Stefán Einarsson (1897—1972)
Professor in the Department of English in the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and
Richard Beck (1897—1980) Professor of Scandinavian Languages and Literatures in the
University of North Dakota in Grand Forks.

In an article by Carl-Otto von Sydow and Finnbogi Guðmundsson in Landsbókasafn íslands.
Árbók. Nýr flokkur 10(1984), it is assumed (p. 44) that the dedication written in the copy of
Jónsbók preserved in Visby is in Bishop Guðbrandur Þorláksson’s own hand. This is questioned
here and by comparing individual letters in the dedication in the Jónsbók with those in texts
definitely known to be written by Bishop Guðbrandur, it is shown that the dedication must be
written by a difierent person.
