The shell-bearing Fossvogur sedi-
mentary layers in Reykjavík have long
been one of the best known fossili-
ferous strata of Iceland. For a long
time, they were regarded as the Ice-
landic type locality for the Eemian
interglacial stage and niore than
100.000 years old. Several years ago,
radiocarbon dates showed these layers
to be from Alleröd and Younger Dryas.
These dates changed not only the
understanding of the formation and
geological history ol' the Fossvogur
layers, but also the whole view on the
late Weichselian geology of SW-
Iceland and the deglaciation of Reykja-
vík. New datings of shell samples frorn
several locations in the neighbourhood
of Reykjavík have now been made and
the results improve the new vision.
Most of the datings were made in
cooperation with scientists al the
Tandem accelerator in the University
of Aarhus.
The radiocarbon ages in the Reykja-
vík area show a glacial coverage of the
whole district at Younger Dryas
maximum. The ice margin must have
