been somewhere off-shore in Faxaflói
bay. Datings from Kjalarnes peninsula
north of Reykjavík indicate that this
area was ice-free during Alleröd and
Younger Dryas so the ice margin must
have been somewhere between Sel-
tjarnarnes and Kjalarnes peninsulas.
The Álftanes end-moraine, in the
Álftanes peninsula near Reykjavík, was
for a long time considered as the type
locality for Older Dryas in Iceland. The
Icelandic term for the Older Dryas is
Álftanesstig, named after this end-
morainc. According to the Younger
Dryas maximum off-shore in Faxaflói
bay it seems clear that the Álftanes
end-moraine is not from Older Dryas.
It seems to be connected to a series of
end-moraines in Kópavogur bay that
are of Younger Dryas or Preboreal age.
The Álftanes and Búði end-moraines
of S-Iceland could be of the same age
but direct dating ol' the Álftanes
moraines is still needed.
