Summary
The author of this article has spent a number of
years translating a substantial selection of Jónas
Hallgrímsson's works into English. Fifty of these
translations, accompanied by a biographical
sketch and an essay on prosody, were published
on thc World Wide Web in 1997 (the URL is
http://www.library.wisc.edu/etext/Jonas/). The
author hopes to publish the entire selection in
book form in the near future.
In the present article he explains why he em-
barked on the project and describes both the
difficulties he encountered and the ways he
attempted to overcome them. He maintains that
in general his work as a translator was guided by
three principles: (1) to convey the essential
meaning of Hallgrímsson's poems with tolerable
fidelity and as clearly as possible and at the same
time (2) to suggest the complexity of their formal
features and the virtuosity of the poet's tech-
nique and (3) to do all this using a relatively sim-
ple and straightforward English poetical lexicon
and unforced, idiomatic syntax.
The problems of translation methodology
addressed in the article are illuminated by nu-
merous concrete examples of translation prac-
tice.
