SUMMARY
‘Þórbergur Þórðarson’s collection of regional words’

The paper discusses some geographically restricted words that Þórbergur Þórðarson
started collecting ninety years ago (1916) and kept on collecting until 1924. This
collection is preserved at the Department of Lexicography at the Ami Magnússon
Institute for Icelandic Studies. The purpose was to find out if Þórðarson’s collection
is of use for the research of geographically restricted vocabulary in Icelandic. The au-
thor compared select words ffom Þórðarson’s collection with the lemmas in the
Icelandic-Danish dictionary of Sigfús Blöndal (1920-1924) who had used the collec-
tion of Bjöm M. Ólsen ffom the late 19th century to mark geographically restricted
words. The result of the investigation is that Blöndal seems not to have used Þórðar-
son’s collection which, on the other hand, gives new information on the distribution,
use and meaning of the vocabulary, as well as supporting the conclusions that had al-
ready been made. The author also checked the collections of the Department of Lex-
icography, both from the written and the spoken language, and comes to the conclu-
sion that Þórðarson’s collection merits further investigation.
