Fyrsta ERTS-1 (Earth Resources Technology Satellite, síðar LANDSAT) gervitunglamyndin af Vatnajökli
og nágrenni, tekin 31. janúar 1973 úr 920 km hæð. ERTS-1 veitti vísindamönnum innsýn í landslagið undir
jöklinum, legu megineldstöðva, öskjur í Bárðarbungu, Grímsvötnum og Kverkfjöllum, legu sprungusveima,
jarðhitakatla og farvegi Skaftárhlaupa úr Skaftárkötlunum (Þórarinsson og fl., 1973). – The first ERTS-1 (Earth
Resources Technology Satellite, later LANDSAT) satellite image of Vatnajökull and surroundings, taken from
an altitude of 920 km on January 31st, 1973. The surface of the satellite image reflects the glacier bedrock
landscape, revealing calderas within the Bárðarbunga, Grímsvötn and Kverkfjöll central volcanoes, and their
transecting tectonic features. Geothermal cauldrons and their drainage pathways are also clearly visible
(Þórarinsson et al., 1973).
