The 2014 Spring Expedition The expedition this
year was unusually large, stretching over 13 days. The
first part (30 May–7 June) had 23 participants, while
the second part (7–11 June) had 16. A large snow
cat took care of most of the transport of equipment,
fuel and instruments. The snow cat participated in
the first part, together with superjeeps and snowmo-
biles. The second part had superjeeps and snowmo-
biles. The first part concentrated on several of the long
term, regular tasks of these expeditions, such as winter
accumulation in Grímsvötn, Bárðarbunga, Háabunga
etc., measurements of the the lake level of Gríms-
vötn, mapping of change in glacier surface because of
geothermal activity at the bottom, research in Kverk-
fjöll, maintenance and setting up of seismic and GPS
stations on Vatnajökull, and several other tasks. In the
second part an array of seismic stations on Skeiðar-
árjökull was laid out to monitor ice quakes, to be re-
trieved later in the summer. Petrological samples from
nunataks were also obtained and geo-radar measure-
ments of firn layering carried out. The expeditions
received support from Landsvirkjun and the National
Road Authority and some of the costs were covered
by institutions participating in the work. The partici-
pants were volunteers from the Glaciological Society,
and scientists and graduate students from the Univer-
sity of Iceland, the Icelandic Meteorological Office,
Gothenburg University, Ludwig Maximilian Univer-
sity in München, British Antarctic Survey, University
of Cambridge and University College Dublin.
