Náttúrufræðingurinn - 1993, Qupperneq 114
of the families are solely American, viz. Vireonidae, with a single species seen in Ice- land, and Icteridae, with 2 species recorded. Of the 15 Emberizidae species recorded here, 6 have straggled from America. The Lapland Bunting (Calcarius lapponicus) is excluded from this paper. Being a migrant that passes Iceland under migration from Greenland to Europe it deserves a fuller treatment than is possible to give here (Fox & Petersen 1993). The Corn Bunting (Emberiza calandra) has appeared on Icelandic bird lists of sev- eral authors. Though there is no substancial record of the species in Iceland. Snow Bun- tings (Plectrophenax nivalis), the only emberizid that breeds in Iceland, in their first juvenile plumage are known to have fooled foreign birdwatchers in Iceland. The data given for each record, are: Local- ity (place, district, county), number of birds if more than one, date or time period, sex (male= karlf., female= kvenf.) and age (imm, ad) if known, name of observer(s) or refer- ence, if the record is previously published. With a single exception, all specimens ob- tained are preserved as study skins at the Icelandic Museum of Natural History. They are designated by a RM-catalogue number (RM=Reykjavik Museum). The exception re- fers to a mounted specimen of Emberiza melanocephala at the Natural History Mu- seum in the Vestmanna Islands. All known records till the end of 1991 are listed. Records from 1981 onwards have previously been published in annual rare bird reports in the Icelandic bird magazine BLIKI. They are all repeated here to make them more easily available to the present reader. Some of the oldest records have also been published previously, while several others are now reported for the first time. For full information, reference is made to the Icelandic text. In the list below only dates will be given. The species are as follows: I. Emberiza citrinella. 12 record.s: 4-11 Jan 1942, 4 April 1942, 9 Nov 1945, 9 May 1950, 25 Oct 1968, 2 May 1974, 25 May 1980, 30-31 Oct 1980, 20 Oct 1984, 14 April 1985, 25 Oct 1987, 17-19 April 1989. 2. A male appeared at Kvísker, SE-Iceland, on 10 May and a female 4 days later. During the summer the female was seen carrying food, but not observed feeding young. The male disappeared in August, but the female stayed on till 28 Septcmber and was accompanied by two birds showing paler plumage and having weaker voice, presumed lo be immature birds by the very keen observer. Interestingly, this same summer the first breeding of the species was witnessed on the Faroe Islands (Bloch & Sprensen 1984). 10.
