Hún lauk námi í tómstundafræðum frá Göteborgs folkhögskola árið 1980, B.Ed.-gráðu í leikskólafræðum frá Kennaraháskóla Íslands árið 1999 og meistaraprófi frá sama skóla árið 2003. Árið 2009 lauk hún doktorsprófi í menntunarfræðum frá Mennta- vísindasviði Háskóla Íslands. Hún hefur unnið sem leikskólastjóri og rekið leikskóla í tugi ára. Jóhanna Einarsdóttir (joein@hi.is) er prófessor við Menntavísindasvið Háskóla Íslands. Hún lauk kennaraprófi frá Kennaraskóla Íslands árið 1973, B.S.-prófi frá Háskól- anum í Illinois í Bandaríkjunum árið 1976 og meistaraprófi frá sama skóla árið 1977. Árið 2000 lauk hún doktorsprófi í menntunarfræðum ungra barna frá Háskólanum í Illinois. Hún hefur stundað rannsóknir á málefnum leikskólans um árabil, ritað fjölda fræðigreina og ritstýrt fræðilegum tímaritum og bókum um efnið. Hún stofnaði Rann- sóknarstofu í menntunarfræðum ungra barna (RannUng) árið 2007 og hefur stýrt henni síðan. The role of preschool curriculum A study on different approaches in four preschools abstraCt The aim of the study presented in this article is to shed light on the role of school curricula in preschools that work in accordance with the Reggio Emilia approach, on the one hand, and with the Hjalli approach on the other. Additionally, it exam- ines how the role of preschools is regarded, how the physical environment and the children‘s activities are planned, and the extent of collaboration with the parents. The aim of the study is not to compare the approaches used in the preschools, but to gain insight into different preschool approaches and how preschools develop their curricula. These two approaches were selected because they are common in Icelandic preschools. The importance of the research lies in understanding two different approaches in preschool work that both fulfill the requirements of the Icelandic National Preschool Curriculum. Four preschools participated in the study; two working according to the Hjalli approach and two according to the Reggio Emilia approach. Although the preschools were selected because of the approach they worked with, they are not representa- tive of the Hjalli approach or the Reggio Emilia approach, since they are all one of a kind. There were 46 individual participants in this research, and data was generated through written documents, individual interviews with preschool directors, and focus group interviews with parents and staff.
