Summary.
In the early part of this article on X-ray examination of hydatid disease
the physical conditions recjuired for hydatid cysts to become visible on
radiograms and by screen examination are briefly exj)lained. Hydatid
cysts of the liver — which are the most comrnon — may appear if thev
are sub-phrenic and cause alteration in the shajre or height of the liver
shadow against the lungs, or alter the diaphragmatic movements. Likewise
if the fibrous capsules are calcified. The author advances the opinion that
X-ray examination is expedient for ascertaining whether hydatid cysts
in expectoration are due to primary cysts in the lungs or sul)-phrenic cysts
in the liver which have perforated into the lungs and the bronchi. He
mentions various cases of hydatid cysts with calcified fibrous capsules
in the liver, lig. latum uteri, and the stomach. Sinuses and cavities after
operations for hydatid cysts may be traced by means of X-rays by inject-
ing bismuth in vaseline into the sinuses, or by introducing lead probes
into the sinuses. Radiograms are shown of two patients with echinococcus
of the bone. The author is optimistic that the new diaphragms for second-
ary rays may so improve the X-ray technique as to make it possible in-
the future to obtain radiograms of hydatid cysts which formerly did not-
appear.
