J. Helgason and R. Duncan jarðlaga, ákvörðun bergsegulstefnu og aldursgrein- ingum sýnum við fram á að elstu hraunlög svæðis- ins mynduðust á Gilbert segulmund fyrir um 4 millj- ón árum síðan. Elstu ummerki jöklunar á svæð- inu eru frá svipuðum tíma. Nokkru seinna, á neðri Matuyama, hlóðst upp 739 m þykkur stafli sem jöklar grófu "Hafrafellsdalinn"á Matuyama, fyrir meira en 2 milljón árum. Sú lægð fylltist af hraunlögum á efri Matuyama fyrir minna en 2 M árum. Kortlagning sýnir 12 rofstig, HR1–HR12, sem mynduðust á síð- ustu 4 milljón árum. Landmótun og rofsögu Hafra- fells er skipt í 6 meginstig en tvö elstu urðu á Ter- tíer, þ.e. Gilbert og Gauss segulmundum, þegar upp- hleðsla hraunlaga var hæg og landslag tiltölulega flatt. Á stigi 3, neðri Matuyama, jókst hraunaframleiðsla um helming og kann landslag við Hafrafell að hafa jafnast mikið á þessum tíma. Í kjölfarið, á stigi 4, myndaðist „Hafrafellsdalurinn“ á efri Matuyama þeg- ar að minnsta kosti 260 metra djúpur dalur varð til. Á stigi 5 fylltist „Hafrafellsdalurinn“ af hraunum og jökulgosbergi. Jarðlög dalfyllunnar hafa Olduvai seg- ulmund sem sýnir að hún varð til á efri Matuyama (ca. 1.95–0.781 Ma). Á þessum tíma var dalakerfi til stað- ar.
